Hello!

These are slides about photo stuff.

Otherwise you might be in the wrong room.

Who am I?

  • Photographer (video too!)
  • Programmer
  • Journalist

... and math stuff.

Who are you?

  • What's your name?
  • Where do you work?
  • What's one thing you want to learn from this?

Some of my work

How'd I get here?

At UO

  • Photo editor at the Emerald
  • Photo intern for The Register-Guard (Snowden!)
  • Built relationships (in person, social media)

After UO

  • Freelance. Still R-G, NYT, others. Commerical work too.
  • Programmer at the Emerald
Be reliable.

How to be better

Well, at least how I got better

Make a lot of pictures

Learn new things

Technology and stuff

Find a mentor

Make yourself uncomfortable

...It's all about story

What can you do right now?

  • Shoot more
  • Pitch stories
  • Seek feedback and mentors
  • Experiment
  • Be willing to fail

You are a brand.

I spend time on:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram

...and only some of that time is wasted.

Foster teamwork

Be fair, create time for fun, be friendly

Communicate

  • Reach out to other editors.
  • Work with them to make great photo requests.
  • This will make you and your photographers happy.
  • It will also make for a great paper.

meet weekly

This sounds hard.

This IS hard.

But, do it anyway. It's really important.

Listen, and try to eliminate pain points. Have some fun.

Be critical

They need it, quite often.

Make them find their own stories

Even if it's just a standalone.

But seriously, they need to shoot stories.

Don't be too nice

It's hard to lead your peers. Sometimes you'll hurt people's feelings.

your turn

thanks!
